The law of tort is an area of primary importance in the study and practice of the

common law in the Caribbean. This work has been conceived as a basic text for

students of tort law in the various institutions of hig her learning in t he region, par-

ticularly for those reading for LLB degrees. It is hoped that it will also be u seful for

students following the CAPE Law syllabus, and for those taking paralegal courses.

Previous editions of the work have also been widely used and cited by legal practi-

tioners. It is hoped that this new edition will conti nue to serve as a valuable resource

to academics and practitioners alike.

Recent developments in tort law covered in this sixth edition include the enact-

ment of the Liability for Dogs Act 2021 (Jamaica) and new case law on such topics

as malicious civil proceedi ngs, negligent misstatements, liability of internet service

providers in defamation and vicarious liability. There is also a new chapter on per-

sonality rights complemented by an extended section on the tort of passing off.

We owe a continuing debt of gratitude to the commissioning and editorial teams

of Routledge/Cavendish for their tremendous support in maintaining the high
